2013 Citizen Patriot Individual Award Recipient
General George A. Joulwan, USA (Ret)
A 1961 graduate of West Point, George Joulwan served at every level of command culminating in assignments as Commander of SOUTHCOM and finally Supreme Allied Commander Europe. His awards and decorations include the Defense and Army Distinguished Service medals, two Silver Stars, Bronze Star w/ V-device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, and the Presidential Service, Joint Chiefs of Staff and Army Staff identification badges. He learned his craft from the best including Generals Al Haig and Jack Vessey, a previous recipient of this award. He in turn has mentored many of today’s leaders including Generals Austin, Odierno and Dempsey. He was one of the earliest active duty leaders to recognize the valuable part that the reserve components could play and utilized them extensively throughout his career. His mantra: “One team, one fight!”
